5. How did Solon change how Athens was governed?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Solon also released those in debt slavery and banned offering one’s own body or those of family members as security for a loan or rent. In addition, Solon granted amnesty to those who had fled into exile because of their indebtedness. He rejected, however, seizing the great estates of the aristocrats and redistributing their land to the poor.

Next, Solon turned to reforming the government of Athens. He believed there was a "right order" for governing the city. First, he reorganized Athenians into four new classes based on their wealth. Noble birth alone had been the basis of the old aristocracy.

Under Solon’s plan, only members of the two wealthiest classes could become archons or magistrates. For the first time, however, he opened up membership in the assembly to all Athenian citizens, even the poor.

Under Solon’s plan, the assembly chose nine archons and the magistrates by lot each year from the wealthy classes. The assembly also passed laws proposed by the archons.

Thus Solon’s new government was not a democracy controlled by the demos, the majority of the people. Rather, it was an attempt to balance political power among the economic classes.

Solon replaced most of Draco’s code of laws with one less severe and fairer for all. "Laws I wrote, alike for noblemen and commoners, awarding straight justice to everybody," he said in a poem.

Many of Solon’s laws concerned family matters. One prohibited dowries to stop marriages based on economic gain. Marriage, he wrote, should be for "pure love, kind affection, and birth of children." He introduced wills that allowed a person to leave property to anyone instead of only to relatives.

He banned the export of all farm produce except olive oil.

Solon reduced the number of crimes punished by the death penalty. He permitted, however, a husband to kill an adulterer caught in the act. He made penalties for theft heavier if committed at night or in a public place. In addition, he forbade publicly speaking evil of either the living or the dead.

Solon also attempted to make the court system fairer to the lower classes. He made it possible for any citizen to step forward and seek justice for someone legally wronged. Before only the actual victim of wrongdoing could make a complaint. Under the old system, the powerful could easily threaten weak and poor victims to discourage them from complaining.

Most important, Solon gave the assembly, made up of all the classes, the authority to act as an appeals court. This was a check on the power of judges elected by the wealthy classes.

The Indus Valley civilization (2600 – 1700 BCE) now stands at the beginning of India’s long history. Much like the states of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, the foundations for that history were established by Paleo-lithic foragers who migrated to and populated the region, and then Neolithic agriculturalists who settled into villages. During the third millennium BCE, building on these foundations, urban centers emerged along the Indus River, along with other elements that contribute to making a civilization.

Answers

Answer:

While I was eating my lunch, a squirrel hopped up on the railing and chattered at me

Explanation:

The best revision of the original sentence would be option A. This is because it leaves no room for ambiguity or confusion unlike the other options.

The other options give the impression that the squirrel was the one eating the lunch, instead of the narrator.

The American forces lost the Battle of the Alamo. Why then is it such a legendary, celebrated event in American history?

Answers

Answer:

For Texans, the Battle of the Alamo became an enduring symbol of their heroic resistance to oppression and their struggle for independence, which they won later that year.

Answer:

Santa Anna's army descended on the Alamo on February 23rd 1836. The battle went on for 12 days and nights until the highly outnumbered Texians were finally overpowered on the morning of March 6. Santa Anna had ordered his armies to take no prisoners, so all defenders inside the Alamo were killed, only a handful of women and children were spared.

Near the start of the siege, Commander Travis had sent a letter to the people of the United States - it was received too late to help the Alamo, but inspired a patriotic national push for Texas independence.

Santa Anna had intended the survivors to spread the tale of the Alamo to intimidate the Texians - but it instead led to the final push to defeat the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto. The brutality of the Battle of the Alamo sparked a strong desire for revenge on the part of the Texians. 6 weeks later, a newly strengthened army led by Sam Houston successfully attacked Santa Anna's troops at San Jacinto in the final battle of the Texas Revolution.

a) Explain ONE specific political development that resulted from the conditions created by the religious policies described in
the passage.
b) Explain ONE specific change to Muslim-Hindu relations that resulted from the conditions created by the religious policies
described in the passage.
c) Explain ONE specific consequence of the policies described in the passage on religious minorities.

Answers

Answer:

A) One specific political development that resulted from the conditions created by the religious policies described in the passage is how Akbar's elimination of the jizya ultimately strengthened the empire. Akbar allowed a series of measures, one of which included abolishing the jizya, to recruit the Hindu majority as well as others with the goal of unifying and expanding the empire. He gave the Rajputs ranks and married their princesses, allowing them to conduct Hindu rites. This alliance strengthened the empire greatly by allowing two major religious groups to live in harmony.

B) One specific change to Muslim-Hindu relations that resulted from the conditions created by the religious policies described in the passage was the tolerance of Hinduism in the empire. While he defeated the Rajputs and was perfectly able to use his troops to slaughter all of them, he instead gave them mercy and rank in the empire. This agreement to ally with the Rajputs helped the empire strengthen itself and allow both Muslims and Hindus to feel included and united under one kingdom.

C) One specific consequence of the policies described in the passage on religious minorities would be the oppressive jizya, which was a tax brought upon non-Muslims. The tax exempted from those who were not able to pay, such as the poor, elderly, women, children, the handicapped, the ill, the insane, monks, hermits, slaves, and foreigners who were only residing temporarily in Muslim lands, meaning that only sane, adult, male citizens paid the tax. The tax created inequality for specifically the poor non-Muslims, separating Muslims and non-Muslims as well as the rich from the poor.

Explanation:

Paraphrased version :)

The specific political development that resulted from the conditions created by the religious policies was the abolition of Jiziyah by Akbar. Akbar was the first Mughal Emperor to abolish the Jizyah. Akbar believed that inequality was taking place between the Hindus and the Muslims. Hence after the abolition of Jiziyah, the Hindus got readily attracted to Akbar's policy.

After the abolition of Jiziyah, Hindu-Muslim relations improved tenfold. The Hindus were recruited into the Mughal army. The Mariage alliance was also conducted between the Muslim ruler Akbar and Rajput Hindu princess Jodha bai. All these led to the harmonious life of both the Hindus and Muslims.

The policy Jiziyah which was prevalent from before the time of Akbar had many consequences.  The poor people of the Indian state were not able to pay up for taxes and were reduced to the condition of the slaves.

What is Jizyah?

Jizyah was a tax that was being paid by the Hindus. This tax was being implemented in India by the ruler Qutub-ud-din Aibak. Later on, during Mughal ruler Akbar's reign the tax was abolished. This Jiziyah tax was mainly paid for the protection of the Hindus from the hands of the enemies.

How did increased trade affect the way that ancient people exchanged goods and services?

It reduced the demand for goods and services.
It made goods and services more expensive.
It made different civilizations interact less often.
It led to standard measures and then currency.

Answers

Answer:

It led to standard measures and then currency.

Explanation:

The increase in trade enables people from different culture/society to engage and trade with one another.

In the past, a problem can occurs if both parties involved do not used the same medium of exchange. (for example, some society used gold to as a medium of transaction while some society used barter method for transaction)

As the times goes by, more and more people start looking for solution to solve this issues.  Standard measures and currency are the things that can be used for that.

Standard of measures allowed people to ensure that they get the most value from their transaction (for example buying 1 bag of rice can be riskty since we can't really know how much rice contained in it. Buying 1 kg of rice on the other hand make us understand exactly what we're buying), and currency allowed people to use one recognized medium of exchange for the transaction.

What was education like in early colonial days?

Everyone went to church to learn.

Everyone went to school.

Everyone learned at home.

Families shared a teacher at home.

Answers

Answer:

The best answer would be B because everyone did school in some form.

Explanation:

New England Colonies, Public Schools: In the New England colonies, since most people lived in the towns, there were enough people to support a public school. Families helped to support the schools with firewood, money, food, produce, and fish. The children of families who could not afford to give firewood or something else to support the school and its teachers had to sit in the back of the room,as far away from heat as you could get. Kids were taught reading, writing, and arithmetic.

The Middle Colonies, Church Schools: The Middle Colonies enjoyed religious tolerance. But, children went to church schools rather than public schools, so they were also taught religion based on the church school they attended. If you couldn't afford to pay for your child's education, then you couldn't. Children were not treated any differently whether their parents paid for their education or not. The Middle Colonies were known as the bread basket. They grew a great deal of wheat and corn. Kids were often needed to help with the crops. So school was out during planting and harvest cycles.

In the Southern Colonies, Home Schooled: In the south, there were very few towns, so there were not many schools. Some kids were sent back to England to attend school. Some had private teachers hired by their family.  The big plantations had dancing masters and music teachers for the planters children. Most kids in the south were homeschooled.

The next best option given up when individuals or firms choose something else is called a(n) _____.

A. trade
B. regret
C. opportunity cost
D. increased expense

Answers

Answer:

A fundamental concept in economics is that of scarcity. In contrast to its colloquial usage, scarcity in economics connotes not that something is nearly impossible to find, but simply that it is not unlimited. For example, the number of available hours in a day is a scarce resource: there is a finite amount of time available to you to do work, hang out with friends, and relax. Most resources are scarce in most situations.

Since resources tend to be scarce, anyone that uses the resource has to make a decision about how to use it. Suppose, for example, that you are a drink manufacturer. To produce a beverage, you have to use some scarce resources: the plastic for the bottle, the workers’ time, a machine to fill the bottles, etc. If you choose to make one bottle of water, you have chosen to not make a bottle of soda. Your scarce resources force you to make a choice and a trade-off producing one product or another.
