In the early days of arctic exploration, dogsled was often the only way to travel. The ice, snow, and extremely cold weather made using other animals, such as horses, impossible. Snowmobiles were not invented yet. Most explorers journeyed by ship until the ice made it impossible to continue. Then, they would switch to dogsled. The dogs, working together, were a well-oiled machine that could cover long distances in the cold.

Sled dogs needed to have long, warm coats to survive the arctic temperatures. They had to be fast and able to run for long distances while pulling a heavy load. Most importantly, they had to work together as a team. This made northern dogs, such as Siberian huskies and Alaskan malamutes, the best choices for the sled teams. These dogs have long coats, with a double layer of fur to keep out the cold, and they have wide paws with webbed toes that act like snowshoes. They have been bred for more than 9,000 years to be working dogs in extreme winter weather. They are friendly, team-oriented, and purposeful dogs. In the days of the arctic explorers, the physical features and determined personalities of the sled dogs made long journeys in harsh conditions possible.

To be in the best condition for pulling heavy loads, the dogs needed a diet that was high in fat. They ate whale and seal blubber and fatty meats during their long journeys, which kept them strong and gave them energy to keep going. The dogs' paws also needed special care to make sure that they did not become injured by sharp ice or extreme cold. Treating the paws with fat or wax helped the dogs to run safely and comfortably.

Although the days of arctic explorers are long past, sled dogs continue to run through the snow and ice of the North. Dogsledding is now recognized as a sport, with many competitions taking place all over the world. One of the most well-known of these is the Iditarod, a race of almost 1,000 miles. It commemorates the Great Race of Mercy that took place in 1925 when dog sled teams were the only hope of a town that needed life-saving medicine. The race takes 8–11 days to complete and is run regardless of weather conditions. Teams of twelve or more dogs train with their handlers for years before competing. The race is long and one of the most challenging in the world. Dogs and their handlers must be in top physical condition to have any chance of winning.

During the race, the dogs get multiple rest stops and are checked by veterinarians to make sure they avoid injuries. They eat high-fat, high-protein foods to give them the energy to continue, just like the dogs of the arctic explorers did. With the same determination that drove the dogs of the 1925 Great Race of Mercy, the dogs competing in the Iditarod run through even the worst blizzards and race to win.

Which information would disprove the author's point that sled dogs need a long coat?

Long coats keep the dog's abdomen and legs warm in extreme temperatures.
Long coats get matted with ice and mud, making it difficult to keep clean.
Long coats act as insulating blankets, making the dogs kennels a safe temperature.
Long coats are easy to care for since the dogs shed their coats when it is warm.

Answer:

Some evidence that the narrator of "The Tell-Tale Heart" is insane is his fragmented speech and agitated tone. The narrator's conceived questionable motive for killing the old man is also concerning, as is the brutality of his crime. The narrator's claim that he has supernatural hearing and his continual insistence that he is sane is further evidence that he is insane.

It is very unlikely that neighbors would be able to hear the old man’s heartbeat. This reveals the narrator’s paranoia and it is this paranoia that propels him to kill the old man because he does not want the neighbors to hear the heartbeat.

Read the following excerpt from Mark Twain's short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavares County," and answer the question that follows.

Smiley ketched a frog one day, and took him home, and said he cal'klated to edercate him; and so he never done nothing for three months but set in his back yard and learn that frog to jump. And you bet you he did learn him too. He'd give him a little punch behind, and the next minute you'd see that frog whirling in the air like a doughnut--see him turn one summerset, or maybe a couple, if he got a good start, and come down flat-footed and all right, like a cat.

What is the most accurate summary of "Minerva and Arachne"?
A.When Arachne weaves, forest nymphs show up to watch. One day, a nymph is watching Arachne weave and says,
"You must have learned from Minerva." Arachne becomes angry
with the nymph. All of the nymphs gasp in shock when Arachne screams that she has
taught herself to weave.
B.Arachne boasts that she is a better weaver than the Roman goddess Minerva. Minerva dresses as an old woman, intent on scolding Arachne for being so disrespectful to a goddess. Realizing Arachne is, indeed, a superior weaver, the furious Minerva turns the girl into the first spider.
C.Arachne is an excellent weaver. To trick her, Minerva comes to Arachne by walking with a cane. When she and Minerva have a weaving contest, they sit facing each other. Minerva weaves scenes of gods and goddesses. Then, she rips Arachne's cloth. Arachne becomes a spider for all eternity.
Arachne thinks that she weaves better than the Roman goddess Minerva. Arachne and
Minerva weave to see who is more skilled! When Minerva sees that Arachne's skills are
greater, she angrily turns Arachne into a spider. Arachne is very foolish to disrespect or challenge a powerful goddess.

Read the excerpt from Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.

After the valuation, then came the division. I have no language to express the high excitement and deep anxiety which were felt among us poor slaves during this time. Our fate for life was now to be decided. We had no more voice in that decision than the brutes among whom we were ranked. A single word from the white men was enough--against all our wishes, prayers, and entreaties--to sunder forever the dearest friends, dearest kindred, and strongest ties known to human beings.

Douglass’s purpose in this excerpt is to

entertain the reader with a suspenseful story.
explain the difference between “valuation” and “division.”
argue that no one else can understand his pain.
inform the reader about the cruelty of slavery.

A says Janice's face turned bright red, so she's most likely embarrassed and not unabashed.

C says that Jessica unabashed her excitement, which isn't correct because unabashed is used as a verb in the sentence, and its supposed to be an adjective.

D is also incorrect because a "not embarrassed three days" would sound weird in a sentence.

B is most likely correct because it says she is an unabashed supporter, EVEN THOUGH, her friends voted for the opposing candidate. This would mean that Barbara is not embarrassed or ashamed that her friends voted for the other side, and that she is fine being on her own side.

What does the analogy "Species of bacteria that are as different as an antelope from an octopus can look identical under a microscope" mean in this passage?

A)Some species of bacteria are as complex as some animal species.

B)Many types of bacteria, even though unique, share characteristics of other species.

C)Some species of bacteria are as big as some animal species.

D)Many types of bacteria function differently but look the same.

Read the following excerpt from Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, by Fredrick Douglass and answer the question that follows.

The plan which I adopted, and the one by which I was most successful, was that of making friends of all the little white boys whom I met in the street. As many of these as I could, I converted into teachers. With their kindly aid, obtained at different times and in different places, I finally succeeded in learning to read. When I was sent of errands, I always took my book with me, and by doing one part of my errand quickly, I found time to get a lesson before my return. I used also to carry bread with me, enough of which was always in the house, and to which I was always welcome; for I was much better off in this regard than many of the poor white children in our neighborhood. This bread I used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins, who, in return, would give me that more valuable bread of knowledge. I am strongly tempted to give the names of two or three of those little boys, as a testimonial of the gratitude and affection I bear them; but prudence forbids;—not that it would injure me, but it might embarrass them; for it is almost an unpardonable offence to teach slaves to read in this Christian country.

Which of the following best summarizes the passages?

It was against the rules to teach slaves to read in white Christian country.

Frederick Douglass was wealthy while the white boys were poor.

Frederick Douglass couldn’t go to school because he had too many errands to do.

The white boys in his neighborhood taught him to read in exchange for pieces of bread.
