Composting requires time and effort to compile the right mixture, and one has to be willing to work on making the compost every day. It is also important to have the right equipment and preserve the compost properly. There is always the risk of insects and rodents damaging the homemade compost.

Additionally, the effort put into making the compost does not always take root. Composting requires proper space and climatic conditions. Cold or dry weather is not ideal for compost, unless one constantly keeps the pile moist. Compost requires a lot of sunlight, which is not always available during winter. Lack of sunlight hampers the decomposition of materials in the compost.

Lastly, creating the right compost requires a trained hand and an expert's guidance. Using wrong kitchen ingredients such as bone scraps, whole eggs, fatty foods, or oil in the compost may damage the plant. One should especially be cautious about using manure made from cat or dog feces in the compost to grow vegetables as it can contain bacteria that can cause diseases in the plant. Nutrient imbalance in the compost could also affect the plants as too much of nitrogen or carbon could corrupt the soil.
