what figure of speech is contained in the expression "a population bursting at the seams" ?

Answers

it's a hyperbole! it is an extreme exaggeration of population management :^)

The figure of speech contained in the expression "a population bursting at the seams" is hyperbole.

What do you mean by Hyperbole?

The usage of exaggeration as a rhetorical tool or determination of speech is referred to as Hyperbole. It's also now and again referred to as auxesis in rhetoric. It emphasizes, conjures up sturdy feelings, and creates sturdy impressions in poetry and oratory.

The missing information on the question is as follows:

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions on it.

It is no longer news that the social and economic problems of African countries continue to worsen. What we experience daily are the vicious consequences of unemployment, inadequate health and educational facilities, urban squalor resulting from a population bursting at the seams, and, most frightening of all, the rate at which crime is rising It is also no longer news that many Africans now see ''checking out" of their countries for other supposedly better ones abroad as the only solution to the problems. In this regard, the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, and Italy are the hot favorites. Most of these Africans are usually so desperate to leave that they fall easy prey to all sorts of passport and visa fraud, and often end up smuggling themselves abroad at all costs. In such countries, they have to do all manner of menial jobs, sometimes resorting to criminal activities, and are often cut off completely from families and relations back home. Young girls who have been enticed with assurances of a rosy future often end up in forced prostitution, with all its unpleasant consequences!

Is "checking out". the ideal solution to Africa's social and economic problems? Of course not! What is baffling is why Africans cannot see abandoning their countries as a step that holds out no solution at all. All that they achieve, in fact, is the substitution of one set of problems for another!

What then should we do? We must look inwards for a more realistic solution. First, we must develop the will to tackle our problems. Where there is a will, it is said, there is a way. If we abandon our problems instead of tackling them, we will simply be leaving an unpleasant legacy for future generations. Secondly, we must orient ourselves tows res self-reliance and self-employment, instead of looking helplessly to our embattled government for salaried employment,

Finally, we must seek a long-term solution by addressing the population question. It is obvious that Africa's outsize population is at the root of the problems. The question we should ask ourselves is. if the average family size in America or Britain were to be as large as the average African family, would these countries still be as attractive to us as they are now? The big puzzle is that we have adopted the white man's lifestyle in all other respects, but have made an exception for family size.

(a) Mention two sequences of the usual desperation of Africans to leave their countries.

(b) The writer argues that escaping abroad is not the ideal solution to Africa's problems. Quote one sentence from the passage that sums up the writer's recommended solution.

(c)According to the writer, why should Africans solve their problems rather than avoid them?

(d) What does the writer consider the most serious cause of African's problems?

(e) What does the writer imply by using the word "supposedly" in the second paragraph?

(f) "What we experience daily . " (i) What grammatical name is given to this expression as it is used in the passage?

(ii) What is its function?

(g) " a population bursting at the seams " What figure of speech is contained in this expression?

(h) For each of the following words or phrases. find another word or phrase which means the same and which can replace it as it is used in the passage. (i) prey' (ii) enticed: (iii) ideal; (iv) holds out; (v) tackle: (vi) head-on.

Therefore, The figure of speech contained in the expression "a population bursting at the seams" is hyperbole.

A. They both created mixtures using living materials.

Explanation:

Their work was mainly established in relation to the effects of endophytes on plants. Endophytes are bacteria that manage to establish a symbiotic relationship and benefit from most of the plants studied. Both of the scientists shown above created solutions with endophytes to be able to study them more efficiently in a plant, that is, both created mixtures with living material.

Which of these statements is punctuated properly?

A)"Your friend, she said," "is waiting for you."
B) "Your friend" she said 'is waiting for you."
C)"Your friend," she said, "is waiting for you."
D)"Your friend, she said, is waiting for you."

Answers

Answer:

C) "Your friend," she said, "is waiting for you."

Explanation:

Punctuation is the use of certain signs and writing forms to make a sentence correct and presentable. And in punctuation, it includes the use of commas, or any punctuation marks and capitalization in a sentence, to make it right.

Among the given sentences, the correct punctuated sentence is option C. This is because the sentence given in the direct speech requires the use of inverted commas to signify the speech. At the same time, the comma after 'friend' denotes that the speech is continuing. And the insertion of 'she said' in between the full direct speech requires the quoted speech to be on pause and not stopped with a period (.).

Thus, the correct answer is option C.

O c) monotonous dull sound

2.

Answers

Answer:

b) Not refined or processed.

Explanation:

The word "crude" is used to refer to the natural state of something, without any changes done to it. This means that 'crude' refers to things that are in their original condition without undergoing any change or correction.

In the given passage, the speaker talks of "crude oil from Lake Maracaibo . . . to be made into gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil." This means that the oil that they got from the lake is in its original state, before any process is done on it to change its properties. This, in short, means the oil is unrefined or not yet processed.

Thus, the correct answer is option b.

Toni knows that over half of the students in her class are nursing or allied health majors. She is a biology major, so she decides to give her informative speech on the history of the discovery of DNA. Has she made a good decision? A. No, she has stereotyped them as all being heavily interested in science. B. Yes, she has picked a very applicable topic for the audience. C. Maybe, but she should think about other characteristics of the audience, too. D. None of the above.

Answers

Answer:

Has Toni made a good decision?

C. Maybe, but she should think about other characteristics of the audience, too.

Explanation:

Toni's decision is not exactly wrong. We can actually say it is a bit too safe. She has chosen a topic that is indeed related to health and that might be seen as interesting by people who study anything that is also related to health. However, she should consider her audience a bit more deeply. Perhaps she could talk to some people in order to come up with a topic that is more useful, or even more entertaining. As a matter of fact, the history of the discovery of DNA is something that most of them are likely to know already.

How did the Louisiana purchase benefit the United States?

A) Pioneers began to farm the new land or use other natural resources. Some of these people used the Mississippi River and the Port of New Orleans to ship their products. This purchase clarified the Constitution, increased riches, and led to buying more land.

B) President Thomas Jefferson believed that for Americans to be virtuous and free, they needed to farm land. He also wanted to obtain the Port of New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi River, so farmers could transport their goods. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States and vastly increased its resources and riches. The roles of the president and the Constitution were also defined, as it was determined that the president could purchase the land without consulting Congress.

C) The Louisiana Purchase benefited the United States because it led to westward expansion, secure waterways, and a stronger nation. Pioneers began to farm the land or use the natural resources. Some of these people used the Mississippi River and the Port of New Orleans to ship their products. This purchase clarified the Constitution, increased riches, and led to buying more land. By strengthening the country, securing waterways, and expanding westward, the Louisiana purchase benefited the U.S.

D) The Louisiana Purchase involved the United States paying France $15 million for their territory. Americans moved into the new land and began to farm. They lived virtuous lives full of hard work and determination. The purchase doubled the size of the United States.
