Men are tormented and enraged, reflecting their invisible torments. Many times isolated or alone. Isolation can come in different forms (physical or emotional). It can be self-imposed or as a result of circumstances beyond your control. Sometimes there is an impressionable heroine whose innocence is broken. This type of literature has an atmosphere of mystery and terror. The plot often contains secrets that threaten the protagonist. Many times it has to do with something supernatural. It focuses on the morbid and grotesque. The world of dreams and nightmares is also important to show the feelings of the protagonists. Also alternate between reality and dreams.
