In the cold northlands of the Vikings, a child named Sigurd is born. Even before he has come into the world, his father, the king, dies in battle against Odin, one of the gods of the Vikings. Sigurd then becomes the stepson of the new king. When Sigurd is young, the king sends him to live with one of his stepfather’s barons, Regin. Regin is a dwarf, a race of magical creatures who live underground and always want more gold than they can get.
One day in the stables, Regin says, "Sigurd, you are the son of the first king; you are strong. Take your inheritance by force, and you will be king."
Sigurd says, "But the king is kind to me. He gives me whatever I ask."
Regin laughs at Sigurd. He asks, "If this is true, then where is your horse? You cannot be a knight without a horse."
Sigurd says, "It will be easy to get a horse. I will show you." So he sets out to find one.
While selecting a horse to buy, Sigurd is approached by an old man.
"You are Sigurd, son of the king; you must choose this great white stallion. He will never fail you."
Sigurd listens to the old man and picks the horse named Grani, a magical steed. After Sigurd leaves with Grani, the old man reveals himself to be none other than Odin. He has disguised himself so that he could help Sigurd without the young warrior's knowledge.
When Sigurd returns with a magical horse, Regin is furious. Regin devises a plan to rid himself of Sigurd. He tells Sigurd, "This proves nothing. Anyone can buy a horse. Kill the dragon Fafnir and all will know of your valor. And you will have riches beyond any other king."
In order to slay Fafnir, Sigurd asks Regin to make him a wondrous sword. When Regin hands him the sword, Sigurd tests it by striking the anvil on which it was made. The sword breaks, so Sigurd asks for another. The second sword also breaks. Sigurd then asks Regin to make him a sword from the broken pieces of the first two. When Sigurd tests the third sword, it slices through the anvil cleanly.
With his sword, his magical steed, and his strength and wisdom, Sigurd gathers his courage and enters battle against Fafnir. Odin, disguised as the old man, appears before Sigurd and says, "You cannot face him head on; you will be slain. Dig a hole. If you do this, you will defeat him easily."
Once again, Sigurd listens to the old man. When the hole is dug, Sigurd hides in it and yells out a challenge to Fafnir. The dragon comes charging. The ground trembles under the fearsome beast, but Sigurd does not run. When the dragon is over the hole, Sigurd strikes and slays Fafnir with one blow. After his victory, some of the dragon’s power spills into Sigurd. The hero becomes even stronger and goes on to accomplish even greater deeds so that his legend still lives on many years later.

PLEASE I AM TIMED Read the excerpt from "Bone Detective."
Diane made a rubber silicone mold of the impression. Then, she made a sturdy wax cast of the mold and sent it to a metalworks company. The foundry workers coated the wax mold with plaster and put it in an industrial oven. The wax melted off, leaving a plaster shell. The workers poured melted bronze into the shell, and the metal cooled and hardened into a bronze tiger tongue.
Diane’s casts of the tongue and paw allowed zoo visitors to share her amazing experience. People felt the roughness of the big cat’s tongue and spread a hand inside the palm of its giant paw. This, she decided, was one of the coolest things I have ever done. She savored the moment, knowing that far graver matters were always just a phone call away.

I NEED THIS FAST!!! NO LINKS PLEASE Read the passage from "Names/Nombres" by Julia Alvarez.
“Say your name in Spanish, oh, please say it!” I had made mouths drop one day by rattling off my full name, which, according to Dominican custom, included my middle names, Mother’s and Father’s surnames for four generations back.
“Julia Altagracia María Teresa Álvarez Tavares Perello Espaillat Julia Pérez Rochet González." I pronounced it slowly, a name as chaotic with sounds as a Middle Eastern bazaar or market day in a South American village.
What is the most likely reason why Julia does not like to say her whole name?
Her entire name is too difficult for her to pronounce.
Her friends like to make fun of her Dominican name.
It embarrasses her because it reflects her ethnicity.
She does not like saying it, because it is too much trouble.

Which sentence in the passage uses definition to help explain the meaning of the word Celts?
Halloween
Halloween is one of the oldest celebrations in the world. In fact, it dates back to before Christianity began. Today, Halloween mainly is celebrated by wearing scary costumes and asking for treats. However, its primary purpose was to remember the dead. It was said to be a day when the spirits would cross over to the next world. Also, the day was originally used to mark the beginning of winter. This tradition was followed by the Celts. This ancient group of people lived in the Bronze Age. Halloween, for them, was rather glum and not a day for rejoicing. Over the years, the holiday became less grim. People began seeing it as a day of celebration. Today, families carve pumpkins to decorate their houses. They also play games, such as bobbing for apples.
Answer:
This ancient group of people lived in the Bronze Age.
Explanation:
If you look at the passage, you are looking to find a sentence that simply summarizes who the Celts were.
In the sentence that I found, it told us in just a couple of words many facts that tell us a lot.
"This ancient group of people lived in the Bronze Age."
From that sentence we know that the Celts were:
- Ancient
- A group of people
- They lived and formed during the Bronze Age
I really hope this helped!

After yet another horrible practice, I felt like quitting. Maybe I just wasn’t cut out to be a figure skater? The toe loops and salchows and loops and lutzes just made me feel like a klutz! I stormed into the locker room and started unlacing my skates with ferocity.
My coach seemed to be able to tell I was getting frustrated and sat down to help me out of the skates.
“Whitney, I noticed you were having a hard time with that axel jump. I could help you practice a bit more outside of class,” Brooke said, as we unlaced.
“You don’t have to sugarcoat it for me, Brooke,” I responded. “Just admit that I’m awful at skating. I’m hanging up my skates for good.”
“Actually, I think you’re very talented. You just need some work,” she said. “Becoming a figure skater is more than just a notion. I fell, hurt myself, and quit a hundred times before I made it to the Olympics trials.”
“Why’d you keep getting up and dusting yourself off? I mean, how did you know that this is what you were born to do?” I asked shyly.
“The first time I ever laced up a pair of skates I was six years old. I stepped onto the ice and promptly fell on my bum,” Brooke laughed. “I didn’t really get interested in skating as a career until I saw Kristi Yamaguchi in the 1992 Olympics. Right then, I knew I was going to have a life-long love affair with skating.”
“Didn’t it take a lot of training to get to the professional level? We only practice four days a week, and I’m so sore I can barely move,” I said.
“It was a lot of hard work, but I didn’t mind. Nothing I had ever done up until then seemed so. . . right,” Brooke said. “I believe that you’re a gifted skater, but you have to believe in yourself and have a passion for the sport. That’s the only thing that will sustain you through all the bumps and bruises.”
I took in Brooke’s words carefully. Even though an injury had ended her skating career shortly after she won the Bronze in the Olympics, she still devoted her time to teaching us to skate. For free. Do I have that kind of passion and commitment? I thought.
“Let me know if you decide you want some extra help,” Brooke gave me a half hug and waved goodbye as she grabbed her bag to leave. “My mornings are always free,” she said with a smile.
"Thanks, Brooke. You’re the best,” I said.
As I shoved all my things in my bag and headed out to my mom’s car, I started to think about my last competition. Brooke was right— nothing compared to the feeling of going into a jump and knowing that you were going to nail it.
“Hey Babycakes, how was practice?” Mom said after I closed my car door.
“It wasn’t that great,” I admitted. “But do you think you could bring me to practice some mornings?”
